Hey Jess. It’s Cousin Pamela. Any thoughts on what happens if Trump purges the military of the good guys and replaces high ranking officers with his loyalists? Heather Cox Richardson paints a terrifying picture in her email today. Trump transition floated the idea of a group of retired military officers to do this.
First off, any president has the right to fire generals. Obama fired McChrystal, and Truman fired MacArthur. He doesn't need a committee. And my next question is: who will fund the committee? If it's legit, it will need Congressional funding, and therefore oversight.
Picking the Fox anchor for Defense Secretary is a case of picking YET AGAIN completely unqualified choices. Will he get confirmed? Depends whether the Senate shuts down so he can make recess appointments -- unlikely he gets through if he needs to go through confirmation.
If Hegseth gets confirmed, his position is that there should be no women in combat roles. No LBGTQIA people at all. There is an issue of "readiness" regarding the ability to protect the country -- which becomes important when you realize that the Chinese are building military nuclear facilities and coordinating with the Russians.
So my question is not about the generals, but more about the actual troops. Will they stay in the military? Will the ranks be decimated? Will they obey unlawful orders?
These are unknowns, and I recommend not buying trouble on this issue ahead of time. There are too many things we can all be doing NOW that will help immensely, and tomorrow's post will have a list.
