Jessica you are too much and too funny under your current circumstances. G-d bless you child🤗😘I want to give you the biggest hug. You are a brilliant writer and need to get going on some books, not just one.
I pray that Tim is doing better. Keep your head on and keep drinking Yohoo. I too love it in a bottle.
Jessica, I am just now reading this and, having spent very little time in hospitals before 2016, find it quite interesting. But mainly I just want to say that I hope Tim is making progress and is more comfortable than before. And to send my love to you both.
America's current health system. if you can call it that, leaves much to be desired. Still, der Fuehrer Trompf and his GOP enablers will do their best to return it to the condition you described as your early experience.
As for favorite foods, mine are lobster bisque and lobster tail. For a beverage treat (not more than once a week, I love a chocolate or salted caramel milk shake.
My childhood comfort food was egg noodles and cottage cheese, with butter and cinnamon. For most of my adult life I could eat neither noodles (gluten? fructan? Anyway, wheat) nor cottage cheese (lactose!) but recently I discovered Lactaid full fat cottage cheese agrees with me, and that plus Jovial brown rice-based pasta has restored my comfort food to me, now a frequent pleasure. I do remember Yoo Hoo but never liked it.
When I was a kid, we were given cottage cheese with sliced bananas, a little sour cream, and dusted with cinnamon sugar. If you like cottage cheese and noodles, you should consider a noodle kugel -- it's noodles with cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream (I bet you could get Lactaid versions) -- plus raisins, crushed pineapple, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, a little allspice -- held together with eggs and baked in the oven. I make it for Channukah every year -- if you for some reason want my recipe, PM me your email and I'll send it to you, since I can't add an attachment here.
Great squeezed cold carrot juice!! I wish I was there to make some for you!! I always learn from you jessica. Glad you are back to writing and sure hope your hubby is recovering.
Yeah... it's now the ED, not the ER... I'm old, too - I do try and call it by its new-ish name, but... ED reminds me of all those online ads...
Things have definitely changed in the 24 years that have passed since I was last in healthcare. Computers were making an inroad, but almost everything was still on paper. Oy!
I've spent time at Paoli - as has Victor. And it was staff at Paoli that got Victor's Mom placed in a SNF after her second stroke. Great and caring staff!
I think I have a Frequent Flier Account with the VA out here. I've been a few too many times over the past couple of years. Twice via ambulance... They can't find a reason for the syncopal events, but I have another MRI scheduled July 1st and another appointment with the seizure folks soon after. And, while the VA has by far the best medical care I have ever experienced, the cracks are showing. Definitely overworked and understaffed. The people are fabulous and put on a brave face to the public, but you can see... (I had a wheel-in-room chest x-ray a couple of weeks ago! Gotta love progress!)
But, to answer your question, there are a few things I like that others out here don't. Beverage-wise it's a Gin Martini. I like Beefeaters. I'm surrounded by Vodka Martini drinkers! Since we only have martinis when we go out to a restaurant, it's not an issue.
I liked Yoo-Hoo when I was a kid, but it's lost its appeal over the years - as has soda, in general. MAYBE once a year I'll have a Mexican Coke - in a glass bottle. Otherwise, it's seltzer water.
But 'nuff bout all that...
Hugs and kisses to you and to Tim. Hoping things work out...
I left medicine in 1995 -- so I know you appreciate all the changes. And yes EVERYTHING was paper based. And if you had to change anything, you had to cross it out, put your initials and date and squeeze in the change, OY is right!
Jessica - that you can find humor while going through such a difficult time personally and politically is testimony to your courage and wit. I've always looked forward to reading you and now even more.
Thanks, Jessica, for sharing all this. I can relate to some, not all of it, but certainly the ER Security part. And, yes, my parents (who are gone now of course) followed me closely when I was in and out of the hospital with my Lupus, but not as aggressively as yours did you. The unsettling experience I had during the hospitalizations of my Casey were that I spent so much time in the ER with him, and unfortunately for myself (after a series of falls), that I was becoming 'recognized', so much so that the last time I ended up there after a fall, the intake nurse already knew I was going to have to change my Emergency Contact....a sad fact that immediately put me in tears. I also once ended up with the same ER doctor that Casey had, a weird turn of events when we looked at each other like it was "old home week"!
It's all horrible is all I can say . And yes, you are correct. We are so lucky to have the insurance that we have and the hospitals we can count on; and my heart aches for those who don't or who won't in the coming years.
I wish you all the best in your journey, and for a positive outcome for Tim. Mine didn't work out so well, and I continue to be devasted at his loss.
How can I help you? I don't know. But I do know that the next time I see a bottle of Yoo Hoo, or two, I shall leave it at your door.
Thanks Betty -- I know things have been very difficult for you these past months. I am so sorry for your sadness and your loss. Don't worry about the Yoo Hoo -- the last time I was at the WaWa on the way home from Paoli, they had buy one - get one for a dollar, so I stocked up!
There's nothing you can do - except -- when Tim's home we have visits from nurses, OT, PT, medical suppliers, etc. I try to move my car so they can park in my spot, but they park wherever -- so if one ends up in your spot, I'm sorry.
Thanks for your condolences. I never thought this would be my lot in life. Considering the way he looked and the way he lived, I thought he'd be holding my hand when it was my turn to go. Life throws so many curve balls. So far, I've outlived two of my rheumatologists, my dermatologist, and now my hunky boyfriend. Me! With Lupus, etc! Go figure! There's no rhyme or reason...
Don't worry about the parking. There are plenty of spaces in the lot! Just do what needs to be done, and Godspeed,...!
An excellent anecdote by a well-read, well-informed, witty-as-hell writer -- YOU! Thanks for posting, and hope your man is improving each day.
I often drink a hot lemon-ginger mix before bedtime -- it comes in crystals made by a company with the (terrifying) name Prince of Peace, but they're the same company that makes those tasty ginger chews, and I love the drink!
Thank you! When I saw "Prince of Peace" all I could think of was that they guy who invented auto-correct died, and his tombstone reads "Restaurant in Piece".

You and I are probably the only ones -- it's SOOOO hard to find!

Thanks Shawn -- Tim is holding his own, and that's really the best we can expect. Love back to you!!!

My family’s version was simpler—just noodles, eggs, farmers cheese (drier than cottage cheese), butter, cinnamon, sugar)
Great squeezed cold carrot juice!! I wish I was there to make some for you!! I always learn from you jessica. Glad you are back to writing and sure hope your hubby is recovering.
Thank you.

I get it about the ED ads.

When you go for your MRI (and GOOD LUCK) you can't wear any metal. I always wear a mask and use these for MRIs since there's no metal. https://alliantbiotech.com/product/readimask-strapless-n95-niosh-approved
Face it, Covid hasn't gone away.
I probably drink 3 - 4 Yoo Hoos a year -- and I drink Mexican or Kosher coke once a year, on New Years Eve when everyone else drinks liquor!
Love and hugs back.

Thanks -- I don't know how much courage and wit I have - but humor keeps me going. Thank you for your support.
