Think back to 2016 when the media couldn’t get enough of then-candidate Donald Trump. They played his rallies from end to end. They gave him far more airtime than they gave to Secretary of State Clinton.
Now, eight years later, they’re doing it again. For some reason, the media is deferential and accepting of the Convicted Felon’s rambling and lies. They could fact check him in real time because he tells the same lies over and over, and the chyrons could easily be ready to go.
For those of you old enough to remember Joe Isuzu, I give you this commercial. Imagine Convicted Felon Trump in the headpiece. For those of you too young to know, Joe (actor David Leisure) spoke about Isuzu automobiles, and the screen displayed “He’s Lying” across the bottom of the commercial. The chyron “He’s LYING” would work for whenever they platform TFG.
But seriously, If you didn’t see Lawrence O’Donnell last Thursday night, you missed his epic takedown of EVERY outlet (including his own, MSNBC) platforming TFG at Mar-a-Lardo, and then ignoring Vice President Harris’ speech to the UAW. On MSNBC, for example, they showed the Olympics in lieu of her speech. If you missed his piece, including the Vice President’s speech, it’s in the video below.
His overall point is that news organizations have never learned how to cover TFG — they let him lie, they do not follow up and treat him in a manner diametrically opposed to how they cover Democrats at all levels.
So, what can WE do?
Write to the TV/Cable outlets and express your dissatisfaction about how they are handling things.
The networks will only move how they do things if there is enough hue and cry from enough viewers. They don’t know if you, personally, are a viewer. Therefore, even if you don’t watch, your response to them can make a difference.
Where to write:
Those are the largest outlets that matter. I don’t advise writing to Fox because they’ll just sell your name and you’ll be inundated with MAGA-mail. You can also write to any local news outlet. Go to their site, scroll to the very bottom, and you’ll see a “Contact Us” link.
Also: if you watch a specific national show, google it and there will be a feedback option for that show.
What to say to the networks?
On <date> you showed Donald Trump speaking for <amount of time> compared to Kamala Harris for <amount of time>. Please explain why you did not afford them equal time.
-Or-
Please explain why you show everything Donald Trump does in full, like his press conference at Mar-a-Lago <or his speech in Billings> while you don’t show Kamala Harris and Tim Walz’ speech on the same day. Why do you favor Trump? Where is the balance?
-Or-
Express, politely, why you feel that platforming Convicted Felon Trump, ESPECIALLY without mentioning that he is a convicted felon, and PARTICULARLY without fact checking in real time, and SINGULARLY without mentioning Project 2025, gives viewers a skewed view of him. Tell them that the worth of a candidate is NOT when they obscure answers to your questions, but rather in terms of what they stand for.
You know what to do…let them know and potentially help spare us all from him cluttering up our screens with his nonsense.
Timely.
I had this conversation with local news anchor, Ukee Washington about a month ago when the local broadcast kept hammering on about Biden's mental decline and possible unfitness for office. They later showed trump being trump and didn't mention how unhinged and unfit he is. I was enraged and sent a pm on facebook to Ukee, who did respond with a "there, there...it's ok little lady..." kind of response assuring me that they do show both sides. They still don't!!!!
